In Search of the Missing Mass

Could the 90% of mass that are missing to close the universe be the "virtual"particles of the vacuum?
Can the short-lived virtual particles of matter and antimatter proposed by quantum field theory fill the gap?
Do we know their density at all?
Do virtual particles have any gravitational effect on our spacetime continuum?

Assume the critical mass in the universe to be exactly Omega=1.000.
Could it be that mankind is then in a position to influence the ultimate fate of the universe?
If we conserve mass, the universe will close and creation will repeat itself.
If we transform matter into energy as we are doing now, we topple the delicate balance towards the definitive heat-death of the universe by our tiny contribution to chaos. The "open universe" as a consequence of the second law of thermodynamics!
