Questionable Turns | |||||||||||||||||||||
Can you name a culture, so money-concious it degrades a person to a "fare" if she/he happens to be a passenger?
Or calls a human being, that should be a valued customer, an "account"?
That's right, the dollar-minded leading nation of the universe!
The same culture has taken the English language to unprecedented heights of sarcasm.
One of the essential materials our life depends on is ground, earth or soil. They call it "dirt"!
The same word as for the filth in a New York back street.
The horrors of human behaviour are played down by yarn like
to "take out", or to "waste", meaning
to kill (to deprive of life, acc. to Merriam-Webster).
Killing seems to be a favourite of the new popular dictionary.
For example, instead of
switching off the headlights, they now kill them.
Have you noticed where Americans take a pee away from home?
In a "bathroom" or a "restroom".
I, for one, have never felt the urge either to take a bath or to relax in any of their toilets.
