(Dictionary for Conserving the Purity of the German Language) |
The National Socialist movement was known for its mania to eliminate words that had entered the German language from Latin, Greek or originated from a modern foreign language.
The vocabulary below contains a few examples of this cramped attitude. Most of them have been coined in serious intention by nationalists. Part of those have never made it to daily use. The remainder is just consequential satire, added to the absurd list by amused outsiders
None of them were invented by me.
About English, Hitler
himself had said: "Ich spreche nicht in der Sprache meiner
Feinde". (I do not speak in the language of my enemies)
The non-aryan vocabulary was in the process of being replaced by a kind of Newspeak.
Admittedly, other countries, (notably France making efforts to protect her language against the overwhelming influence of English) have had their spells of linguistic inquisition.
Despite its unsavoury origin, the practise of keeping the German language pure and free of foreign words is an endeavour still pursued in present day German linguistics. The only exception appears in words adapted from the English language, mainly Americanisms, which are embraced with a downright greedy fervour. A number of them are applied in a context quite different from their original meaning (e.g. "Handy", meaning mobile telephone).
Among the three main German speaking people, we Swiss are proud of our tradition in using a more international-minded form of German. Our written German contains a wealth of words from Latin, ancient Greek and French.
The Swiss German version (centre column) of the purified word (left hand column) is easier to understand for most Europeans. The right hand column gives the nearest English equivalent.
