A Collection of Broken Taboos: |
Language - Mirror of Behaviour? |
American English.
What is the world to expect of its "leading nation" in the line of preventing environmental collapse?
Are they not the world's leading fuel-guzzlers, do they not boast the most inefficient systems in energy conservation? Are they not the world's chief promoter of continued global g-r-o-w-t-h
on all levels?
What can Earth expect of THEM?
The very word they use for earth (ground, humus, soil) in their language is: D I R T !!!

Can you imagine anything like:
1. "Mad dogs and Americans go out in the midday sun"? or
2. "No sex, please, we're Americans" ? or
3. "Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the Streets of Los Angeles" ?
Substitute Englishmen for Americans in 1 and you have song, written by Sir Noel Coward
Put in British instead of Americans in 2 and you have an English theatre play and film
Change Los Angeles into London in 3 and you have a song, written by R. McTell and performed by Roger Whittaker.
Replace American cockiness with the courage to point satire even at yourself and at your country and you have a more likeable character.
Turn of the Millennium |
Why all the fuss raised by the media as the year 2000 approaches?
What it really means is rather sobering:
That the earth has orbited the sun once since the last time we celebrated the occasion of a "New Year". Not less; not more.
Why?
1. The decimal system is not anchored in nature.
2. Many cultures do not believe that the creator of the Universe had a "son", born as a human being 1999 years ago.
Ecological Conservation Starts at Your Front Door ! |
At first sight this appears to be a good beginning. Maybe here and now a change in global attitude should be raised.
Taboo Breaker humbly asks to be allowed to disagree. The impact expected by local politicians will be drowned or rather, spread all over the East.
To wit:
Localised crusades for better air quality are the work of clowns!
Have these bureaucrats-of-good-intentions really never heard of the earth's rotation causing a phenomenon called WIND?
