The Monthly Taboo Break

Nr. 11 in a series on displaced problems in human behaviour

Sex-n-Crime

Dear America

You seem to be on the verge of becoming a very sick society indeed! Getting sicker by the day, a myopic self-overestimation keeps you from treating the disease.

Marital infidelity is reason enough to remove your president from office. Do you realise at all how you are becoming the rest of the world's laughing stock? Do you even care?

A while ago, another of your presidents was allowed to squander unheard-of sums of money for moving the entire world to the brink of extinction. He was never even near the danger of "impeachment" for doing that! Are you slowly slipping out of your collective minds? Maybe not.

After all your pathetic word-construction "Sex-n-Crime" puts sex ahead of crime in this short list of despicable human endeavours. Apparently, to your dinosaur fundamentalist, it is the greater of two evils. To morally healthy Europeans "sex-n-crime" sounds like "roses-n-pus". In your sick society it is apparently OK to fill the screens with ever increasing bloody violence, but God forbid the mere sight of a naked human being! The latter has been banned from the eyes of children since decades. Not so your increasing brutality.
Your skewed picture of sexuality also shows in the street use of words related to sex, such as the ever-present "fuck..." and "fucking...". While to a healthy European these expressions are nothing more or less than the rude form for a pleasurable activity, you use them as curses!

While you have been successful in campaigns against sexual harassment at work or in banning smokers, you cannot even control the spread of deadly firearms.

Therefore, Mr. Clinton's little escapades represent more of a reason to oust a "world leader" than Mr. Reagan's war games.

Doesn't a society that subscribes to such morale, loose its title to world leadership? If health of mind in leadership is relevant, I say it does. But in your case, dear America, it is not the president, whose health is impaired as is e.g. Mr. Yeltsin's. It is the health of a system we used to admire for its individual freedom, its quick grasp of new ideas, its raw simplicity.
In the past twenty years your society has lost just about all there was that made it the dream of peoples all over the world. Except perhaps, its scientific and technological cadre.
American's youth is far from enjoying the best education system in the world and your underprivileged minorities are a long way from sharing what your great founders and constitution once proclaimed. If my country's national debt was percentually anywhere near that of the United States of America, it would sink into shame before going bankrupt. Some of the liability claims asked by your lawyers are just a hair's width from crippling industry.

I'm not alluding that any country is generally better than any other. But my world travels have shown me that there is something in every country that it "does better" than others. If you claim to be the greatest in all walks of human life, you are claiming a great deal too much today.
I notice that the Americans I know, have a hard time acknowledging that the British enjoy a better quality of life, that the Italians make better coffee, that the French have a better public transport system or that the Chinese have a better family life.
As to keeping your own house clean, your citizens are known to be the world's most ferocious energy guzzlers. Saving the planet is OK, as long as it does not require Americans to budge one inch from the path of the holy cow called "The American Way of Life"..

We are all relieved, now that the Russians have stopped to co-threaten the world. However, I am beginning to worry about my former model society gradually taking its place.
